There is a wide variety of woods that can be used to build acoustic or electric guitars. Because of the varied densities of the many different types of woods used, the sound produced will vary correspondingly. Ultimately, choosing the right wood for a guitar will fall completely upon the fundamental sound and music style desired to be achieved by the musician who plays it.

Mahogany

Compared to other popular choices of wooden guitars, mahogany is know to have a lowered velocity of sound and a significant density with low overtones. Mahogany guitars are capable of producing a strong solid tone and are a popular choice among country-blues musicians.

Maple

Maple guitars tend to produce sound at a lowered velocity as well. Sometimes the sound quality of a maple structured guitar can be considered almost flat. However, maple is a popular choice for more aggressive musicians because of its intensified presence when amplified. Maple is a popular choice for makers of electric guitars for rock or heavy metal music
.

Alder

In the physical sense, alder is good choice of guitar woods for comfort and portability for an active stage performer. It is a light wood that produces a vibrant sound and full, rich tones when played. Alder provides an even balance of high, low and midrange tones.

Koa

Koa wood is harvested exclusively in Hawaii, which makes koa wood guitars a bit more expensive and difficult to find than guitars made of most other woods. Koa wood is a very popular choice among bass guitar manufacturers because it produces a deep, warm tone. Koa is very similar to mahogany in guitar wood categories but stands apart because of its concentration on midrange tones.
